Shapes of nearly cylindrical, axisymmetric bilayer membranes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shapes of nearly cylindrical sections of axisymmetric phospholipid membranes are studied theoretically. Describing the shape of such sections by their deviation from a reference cylinder, the wellestablished shape equation for axisymmetric bilayer membranes is expanded in terms of this deviation, and it is then solved analytically. The phase diagram shows the resulting stationary shapes as functions of system parameters and external conditions, i.e., the pressure difference across the membrane, the membrane tension, the difference between the tensions of the two monolayers, and the axial force acting on the vesicle. The accuracy of the approximate analytical solution is demonstrated by comparison with numerical results. The obtained analytical solution allows to extend the analysis to include shapes where numerical methods have failed. Phase diagrams and shape transformations of toroidal vesicles
Shapes of vesicles with toroidal topology are studied in the context of curvature models for the membrane. For two simplified curvature models, the spontaneous-curvature (SC) model and the bilayer-couple (BC) model, the structure of energy diagrams, sheets of stationary shapes and phase diagrams are obtained by solving shape equations for axisymmetric shapes. Three different sheets of axisymmet...
متن کاملVesicle deformation by an axial load: from elongated shapes to tethered vesicles.
A sufficiently large force acting on a single point of the fluid membrane of a flaccid phospholipid vesicle is known to cause the formation of a narrow bilayer tube (tether). We analyze this phenomenon by means of general mathematical methods allowing us to determine the shapes of strongly deformed vesicles including their stability. Starting from a free vesicle with an axisymmetric, prolate eq...
متن کاملCylindrical equilibrium shapes of fluid membranes
Within the framework of the well-known curvature models, a fluid lipid bilayer membrane is regarded as a surface embedded in the three-dimensional Euclidean space whose equilibrium shapes are described in terms of its mean and Gaussian curvatures by the so-called membrane shape equation. In the present paper, all solutions to this equation determining cylindrical membrane shapes are found and p...
متن کاملBilayer-thickness-mediated interactions between integral membrane proteins.
Hydrophobic thickness mismatch between integral membrane proteins and the surrounding lipid bilayer can produce lipid bilayer thickness deformations. Experiment and theory have shown that protein-induced lipid bilayer thickness deformations can yield energetically favorable bilayer-mediated interactions between integral membrane proteins, and large-scale organization of integral membrane protei...
متن کاملLipid polymorphism and the roles of lipids in membranes.
The reasons for lipid diversity in membranes are not understood. Here we review evidence supporting the proposal that factors related to the polymorphic capabilities of lipids provide a rationale for lipid diversity. In particular, the ability of lipids to adopt different polymorphic phases appears to be related to a generalized shape property, where lipids with a cylindrical geometry preferent...
